Long An – Where Rivers Whisper and Lotuses Bloom
My journey to Long An began on a misty morning, as sunlight shimmered over endless rice fields and the gentle currents of the Vàm Cỏ Đông River. Unlike the bustling cities nearby, Long An welcomed me with a sense of calm — a place where time seemed to slow and every breath carried the scent of wet earth and wildflowers. I started my day at Tan Lap Floating Village, a unique eco-tourism site nestled within the vast Đồng Tháp Mười Wetlands. As I wandered along wooden walkways above the water, lotus blossoms and water lilies stretched as far as the eye could see. The quiet was broken only by the call of rare birds and the soft splash of fish in the shallows. Local guides shared stories of the wetlands’ importance — not just as a natural wonder, but as a source of life and tradition for generations of families. Later, I visited a nearby craft village, where artisans patiently wove mats from sedge grass and shaped delicate pottery by hand. Their skills, passed down through the years, spoke of a quiet pride and a deep connection to the land. Over a simple meal of cá lóc nướng trui (grilled snakehead fish) and fresh lotus root salad, I listened to tales of the river — of floating markets, old love stories, and the resilience of people who live in harmony with the floodwaters. As dusk fell, I took a boat ride along the winding canals, the sky painted with hues of orange and purple. Lanterns flickered in riverside homes, and laughter echoed from a distant folk music gathering. In that moment, I understood why Long An is called the “gateway to the Mekong Delta” — a place where nature, heritage, and hospitality come together in gentle harmony. Long An is not just a destination; it’s a feeling — of peace, simplicity, and the enduring beauty of Vietnam’s southern heartland.
